Victor’s mother, Ida Breland, was born on June 10, 1893 to William Lorenzo Dunnam and Mary Ella Jackson.
Ida was the oldest of her siblings, and she was still attending school at the time of the 1910 Census. Ida was married at age 24 to Isham Henry Curtis Breland. In 1920, Ida and her husband had one son, Garner “Geanie” P. Breland, and they also had a daughter, Hazel M Breland, who was born in 1923. |
Isham Henry Curtis Breland, Victor Houston’s stepfather, was born in September 1889 to Braxton B Breland and Nancy L J Breland, who married just two years after his birth. When Isham was 10 years old, he was a laborer on his parent’s farm in Fair Hope, Mississippi.
Isham later enlisted in the military on July 8, 1918 at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He embarked from Hoboken, New Jersey November 9, 1918 with the Oversea Casual Company #524 Infantry on the Tjisondari. Isham was not overseas for long as he was declared to be a farm owner in the 1920 Census. |
Victor Dunnam's half-brother, Garner Pershing Breland, was born January 24, 1919 to Ida Ruth Breland and Isham H C Breland. He later married Glenda L Breland. but the couple never had any children.
Garner registered for the Civilian Conservation Corps on October 16, 1940 as a resident of Beaumont, Mississippi. According to the 1940 Census, Garner was a truck driver at the time and in his fourth year of high school. He was still dependent and living with his mother, father, and sister in Perry, Mississippi. Garner also enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 16, 1940 at Camp Shelby. In August 1944, Garner was discharged from the U.S. Army after being injured from an artillery shell striking his hand. He later died on February 16, 1987 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. |
Victor’s half-sister, Hazel Marie Breland, was born February 25, 1923 to Ida Breland and Isham H C Breland. She later married her life-long husband, John L Trebotich, and they had a daughter named Phyllis. Hazel passed away at 91 years old on June 19, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, and brother Garner. |
